Frequently asked questions and tips for Still.

Playback & Audio

There are no Previous/Next chapter buttons. How do I switch chapters?

Swipe left or right on the chapter title in the middle of the player to go to the previous or next chapter. Tap the title to open the chapter list. Both work in the full player and the mini player.

Can I adjust playback speed in 0.05x steps?

Yes. Open the Volume & Speed panel in the player. The slider moves in 0.1x steps; tap the tortoise icon on the left to subtract 0.05x, or the hare icon on the right to add 0.05x.

How do I use a different speed for each book?

Open the Volume & Speed panel and tap This Book Only in the top-right corner. Speed and volume are then saved for that book alone, and your global settings stay unchanged. For podcasts the button reads This Podcast Only.

Can I automatically skip the intro and outro of each chapter?

Yes. In the player or on the book details page, open the more menu (…) and choose Skip Intro & Outro to set how many seconds to skip at the start and end of each chapter.

Why does CarPlay pause instead of lowering the volume during navigation prompts?

Apple recommends this for spoken audio. An audiobook is all voice, so lowering its volume makes it and the navigation prompt talk over each other, and you miss both. Pausing means you miss nothing, which is how Apple Books and Audible behave too.

To keep playing during prompts, send your navigation app's voice guidance to the media audio channel. In Amap, for example: Settings → Navigation Settings → More → CarPlay Settings → Media Channel.

How do I play podcast episodes back to back?

Still does not play the next episode on its own. Continuous playback uses the queue:

  • Tap the selected Continue, Favorite or playlist tab once more and choose Play All. The first episode starts and the rest join the queue.
  • Swipe right on an episode (Play Next) to add it to the queue.

Reading & Ebooks

Can I turn pages in an ebook with the volume buttons?

Yes, it is off by default. In the reader's display settings, tap More Settings and turn on Use Volume Buttons. Due to iOS limits, the volume may fluctuate slightly while audio is playing.

What is Listen & Read?

When a book has both an audiobook and an ebook, Still can continue from where you stopped in the other format. Turn each direction on separately in Settings → Listen & Read; both are off by default:

  • Read Where You Listened: opening the ebook jumps to where the audiobook stopped. Still matches the audio to the text with on-device speech recognition, so the first use may download resources. Ask and Automatic require Still Supporter.
  • Listen Where You Read: starting playback jumps to where you stopped reading. The position is estimated by chapter, so it may be off. Free to use.

Ask prompts before jumping; Automatic jumps right away. Requires iOS 27. In Audiobookshelf, put the ebook in the same folder as the audiobook and turn off the library's Audiobooks only option.

Connection & Sign In

How do I connect to a server behind Cloudflare Zero Trust or a reverse proxy?

On the sign-in screen, tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Connection Settings, then add request headers such as CF-Access-Client-Id and CF-Access-Client-Secret under Custom Headers. If you get a TLS error, turn on Allow Untrusted Certificates on the same screen.

Does Still support OpenID (OIDC / SSO) sign-in?

Yes, including Authentik, Keycloak, Authelia and PocketID. Once OpenID is enabled on your Audiobookshelf server, the sign-in screen shows Continue with OpenID. Check three things:

  1. Redirect URI: add stillapp://oauth to Allowed Mobile Redirect URIs in Audiobookshelf. If it is missing, the error message offers a button to copy it.
  2. HTTPS: the server address must start with https://.
  3. Cloudflare or a reverse proxy: set the custom headers in Connection Settings before signing in.

Shortcuts & Automations

How do I switch between my LAN and public server address based on Wi-Fi?

Use Still's Switch Server action in a Shortcuts automation:

  1. In the Shortcuts app, open the Automation tab and tap +.
  2. Choose Wi-Fi, pick your home network, and set it to Run Immediately.
  3. Add Still's Switch Server action and choose your LAN address.
  4. Create a second automation for leaving that network that switches back to your public address.

How do I start a sleep timer automatically at night?

Use Still's Start Sleep Timer action:

  • Run it when your Sleep Focus turns on, for example for 30 minutes or until the end of the chapter.
  • Run it when you open Still after 11:00 PM.
  • Combine Resume Playback and Start Sleep Timer in one shortcut, and put it on your Home Screen or Action Button.

How do I switch libraries quickly?

There are two quick ways:

  • Long-press the Still icon on the Home Screen and choose a library.
  • Use the Switch Library action followed by opening Still, and put it on your Home Screen or Action Button. Each library gets its own entry.
